Pacquiao VS Cotto: Pacman to Train in Baguio, Philippines?

If Manny Pacquiao decides to spend the first half of training camp in the Philippines, trainer Freddie Roach said Saturday he doesn’t have a choice but follow what the big boss wants.

But Roach said he would like to make a simple request.

“If we train in the Philippines, I’d tell Manny to train in Baguio,” Roach told the Bulletin. “Not in Cebu. I heard the weather is fine up there (in Baguio) and there’d be less distractions (compared to Cebu or elsewhere).”

“Realistically speaking, I’d like to train (Pacquiao) outside the Philippines but…” said Roach, aware that Pacquiao has the final say on the matter.

With a little three months to go before Pacquiao faces Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Roach is getting antsy as he has yet to get a call either from Pacquiao’s camp or Top Rank informing him of the latest developments.

“I have not heard from them,” said Roach, when asked about the other pertinent details of the Pacquiao-Cotto slugfest.

Pacquiao is being advised to train outside the US for the first four weeks to avoid shelling out millions in taxes.

Top Rank head Bob Arum is offering Pacquiao to train in utmost seclusion in the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas courtesy of a dear friend, while Pacquiao lawyer Franklin Gacal is training his sights on Vancouver, Canada.

Others being considered are Mexico and the Philippines with Manila and Cebu being mentioned as possible sites aside from Baguio.

While Roach is in the dark, the multi-awarded cornerman has already made a big step as far as the start of training camp... To read the full article, click If Pacquiao decides to train in RP, Roach wants Baguio by The Manila Bulletin

Nonito Donaire Following Manny Pacquiao's Lead

...Manny Pacquiao has the name in the Philippines. He has the know-how, too. Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire also knows how to fight very well. Now all he has to do is make more of a name for himself.

It won't be easy because Pacquiao is the man in the Philippines.

"I believe from this point on, everybody will be tied to Pacquiao," said Donaire, who will move up in weight next Saturday and take on Rafael Concepcion (13-3-1, 8 KOs) of Panama for an interim super flyweight world championship at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

The card will be available on pay-per-view. The semi-main event will feature Steven Luevano of La Puente defending his featherweight world title against Bernabe Concepcion of the Philippines.

That there is another Filipino fighting for a world title in the semi-main event speaks volumes about how far Filipino fighters have come since Pacquiao began paving the way for them.

In his first fight in the United States in June 2001, Pacquiao stopped Lehlohonolo Ledwaba in

the sixth round to win a super bantamweight world title.

Pacquiao's subsequent rise to stardom in his country and ultimately the world created an opportunity for which fighters like Donaire and Concepcion are taking advantage.

"In the early years of my career, I could not get a fight," said Donaire, who already has won a world title in the flyweight division.

"I was one of those guys who would take a fight on two days notice. I would take it because I didn't have the option to do it my way."

Donaire, 26, made his professional debut four months before Pacquiao's win over Ledwaba. He has watched as his countryman has made an indelible mark on boxing as well as their homeland.

"We are just so honored for what he has done for our country," Donaire said...

Details on Manny Pacquiao VS Miguel Cotto Fight

It took a 15-minute phone conversation with Bob Arum for Manny Pacquiao to agree to fight Miguel Cotto in November.

At 145 pounds flat.

“It’s done,” said Pacquiao’s adviser, Mike Koncz, over the phone last night, sounding happy that the Filipino pound-for-pound champion has finally come to a decision on whom to fight next.

Koncz was scheduled to leave for Los Angeles last night to meet with Arum and discuss the final details on the fight contract which has yet to be signed by the 30-year-old superstar.

“No contract has been signed but Manny and Bob had a verbal agreement. And we’ve never backed out of any verbal agreement so Bob is happy with that for the time being,” said Koncz.

Pacquiao was busy shooting a movie when The STAR tried to contact him last night.

Negotiations for Pacquiao’s next fight took a sudden twist last week when Shane Mosley, the WBA welterweight (147 lb) champion, said he’s willing to fight the Filipino at 140 lb, and get 40 percent of the purse.

Cotto, the WBO welterweight champion, had insisted that he’d only fight Pacquiao at 145 lb, and not a fraction lower than that. This gave Pacquiao some doubts on whether he’d take the Mosley challenge instead.

Pacquiao’s lawyer, Franklin Gacal, said they wanted Cotto to drop down another pound or two, but now that everything’s been agreed upon, it’s time to focus on Cotto.

Koncz did not say what made Pacquiao seal the deal with Arum, the legendary promoter and master negotiator.

“Manny had a personal phone conversation with Bob Arum the other night and it lasted 15 minutes. Some adjustments were made and Manny has agreed to fight Miguel Cotto,” said Koncz.

“They resolved everything. They talked for about 15 minutes,” said Koncz.

Pacquiao had wanted his next fight staged on Oct. 17 but Arum, who also owns the promotional rights over Cotto, said that would run against the World Series schedule, and pushed the date to Nov. 14.

The extra month will also give Pacquiao ample time to finish all his previous commitments, incuding two movies he has to make, probably another string of commercials, some business deals and more time with his family.

Details on Manny Pacquiao VS Miguel Cotto Fight

The insistence of Miguel Cotto not to put his world title at stake when he fights Manny Pacquiao is being blamed on Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum.

Pacquiao lawyer Franklin Gacal said on Friday that Arum's hasty decision to come out with an announcement about the Pacquiao-Cotto fight scheduled Nov. 14 in Las Vegas early last week could be one of the reasons behind the insistence of Cotto to stand firm on his decision not to stake the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown.

"I don't know why Bob made the announcement when in fact we haven't seen the (official) contract," said Gacal when asked about the other pertinent details of the contract.

Arum has both Pacquiao and Cotto under the promotional banner of Top Rank.

Cotto's decision not to risk the WBO 147-lb crown stems from the fact that the fight is going to be at a catch weight of 145 lbs and that during the negotiations, Team Pacquiao did not bother to raise the issue.

Cotto said he will only risk the WBO title if Pacquiao agrees to face him at 147 lbs.

"(My decision is) final and firm," Cotto told El Nuevo Dia in a story that appeared on the paper's July 31 issue. "The belt is not going to be on the line in the fight."

Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach, already panicky about the prospects of bringing Pacquiao somewhere else other than the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, was bothered when told about the development.

"The WBO should make it a title fight. We don’t need the fight if the title is not on the line," Roach told The Bulletin. "I want Manny to do this for a reason. I want Manny to win seven world titles. Titles are overrated but I would like to see Manny do this."

There's been no seven-division world champion in boxing and Roach is dead-sure Pacquiao will become the very first when he faces Cotto.

Pacquiao VS Mayweather?

...Floyd Mayweather’s last fight came against then unbeaten Ricky Hatton in a tenth round stoppage, and Mayweather retired from the sport shortly after that fight. With Floyd Jr. out of the picture, Manny Pacquiao officially became boxing's Pound 4 Pound champion. Once he was crowned the best, Manny planned on keeping it that way. He got in the ring with former Mayweather foes Oscar de la Hoya and Ricky Hatton, and what Mayweather couldn’t do in the ring Pacquiao did, when he forced  Oscar de la Hoya to quit in the 8th round and when he knocked Ricky Hatton out in the 2nd round. Manny Pacquiao seemed to get better with each fight and the fans outcry questioning who would win between Pacquiao and Mayweather kept getting louder and louder.

Most boxers' retirements are short-lived, they either miss the glory, the adulation bestowed upon them or they miss the money; most likely it’s a combination of both. Floyd Mayweather Jr., like so many other fighters before him, has come out of retirement to fight again.

I’m not sure why Mayweather has come back; and while it could be for the glory or maybe even the money, my best guess is he came back because the boxing world is now calling Manny Pacquiao the best fighter in the world.

Mayweather retired in his prime and still feels he is the best in the world. His first fight back will be against Juan Manuel Marquez on September 19th of this year. Mayweather will be the favorite to win the bout but this is boxing and -as we all know- anything can happen. It’s been nearly two years since his last fight, and in boxing two years can seem like a lifetime. Ring rust can always be a factor and let's not ignore the fact that Juan Manuel Marquez is a world class fighter. With that being said,  and barring an unexpected circumstance, I do believe Mayweather will beat Marquez, and if that's the case the only logical fight for him is against Manny Pacquiao.

However, before that can happen Manny Pacquiao has his own hurdle to cross -and a big hurdle it is- in Miguel Cotto, who has only one blemish on his ring record. That loss should have an asterisk next to it, considering he took what should be considered an illegal beating from “Hands Of Cast” Antonio Margarito.

Cotto will come into the ring the naturally bigger man, but that type of situation hasn’t seemed to give Pacquiao any problems as of late. If both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. can get past their upcoming opponents, then it’s a must that they fight each other. However, I don’t think their upcoming fights will be the biggest obstacle in getting the fight made. I believe the biggest problem will be who gets the bigger cut of money.

It always comes down to the money; in the end money has knocked out more fights then we care to count. Mayweather has gone on record claming he doesn’t need Pacquiao, Pacquiao needs him, adding he’s the bigger draw. I have to disagree with both comments made. Pacquiao has made a big name for himself without the help of Mayweather and if they were to fight, I’m willing to bet there will be more Pacquiao fans in the house than Mayweather fans. As for the fight itself, if it does happen and as of right now that’s a big IF, I can see it playing out in so many different ways. The battle between trainers Roger Mayweather and Freddie Roach makes for a great sub plot in itself. With so many factors still in the way, this is a fight that needs to happen; not to save boxing but to treat the boxing fans who love the sport so much.
